Around the Mekong: Thaton and the Golden Triangle

Northern Thailand, also called Lanna, is famous for its vast valleys and hilly landscapes and for its cultural heritage. Different hill tribes call this area their home. They speak their own language, wear the clothing typical for their tribe and retained their traditions and culture.
On this one-week tour in Northern Thailand you will experience the natural and cultural variety away from mass tourism. You will discover the local life at first hand and learn a lot about the Buddhism, the Thai culture and the region’s flora and fauna. The tour is manageable with average sportiness. Get an impression of Northern Thailand’s beauty.

Day 1: Arrival in Chiang Mai
At your first day, you will arrive in Chiang Mai. It is the capital of Northern Thailand and famous for its cultural heritage and astonishing natural surroundings.
You will be picked up at the airport and brought to your hotel. “The Rim” hotel is located in Chiang Mai’s old town and is built in Thai architecture style. You will visit the famous Night Bazaar in the evening. In the typical Thai Food Centre you will get traditional Thai food before you can stroll about the market.

Day 2: Chiang Mai: Market and Temple
You will see the famous Warorot Market in the morning. Discover exotic fruits, Thai specialties, herbs, traditional medicine, flowers, Chinese gold shops and so much more in this vivid place.
After lunch at a wonderful colonial house, you will walk along the town wall to the temples Wat Pra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang that are located in the old town. Thereafter, you will drive up the mountain to visit the famous Doi Suthep temple. You will have a breath taking view over the city. Your guide will introduce you to the Buddhism because 90% of Thailand’s inhabitants are Buddhists. You can watch the monks’ Chanting at 6 pm.

Day 3: Chiang Dao and Thaton
Today we will start to the north - on the way visit a limestone cave in Chiang Dao. It was used as a temple in previous years and is an impressive destination. Thereafter, a three hours’ drive will take you to Thaton at the border to Myanmar. You will get lunch on the way.
After your arrival in Thaton, you will visit the temple Wat Thaton on the hill where you will have a breath taking overview over the hilly landscape. Buddha statues are set up on each level of the hill and the colourful Stupa on top is the highlight of this temple.

Day 4: Thaton - Trekking Tour
Today you will start for your Trekking Tour. A local guide will walk you through rice fields and the jungle. He will provide you information about the flora and fauna. Before lunch, you will carve your dishes out of bamboo: a spoon, a cup and a plate. Thereafter, you will prepare your lunch on the fire together with your guide.
After lunch, you will continue hiking through beautiful landscapes. You will visit a hill tribe village to discover the local life. This is a soft trekking tour and manageable with average sportiness.

Day 5: Thaton Hill Tribe Village and Boat Tour
You will hike to a Lahu hill tribe village in the morning. You will get in touch with the life style and traditions of this tribe. The school in this village is supported with parts of your travel expenses.
After lunch at the riverside, you will get on a longtail boat that will take you 3-4 hours downstream to Chiang Rai. You will see beautiful landscapes, animals taking a bath and people at the riverside during your boat trip. After your arrival in Chiang Rai, you will be picked up by your guide and a 1.5 hours’ drive will bring you to the Mekong River. On your way you will visit the Black House – an impressive building created by a famous Thai artist.
Check in at the Siam Triangle Resort. You can overlook the Mekong River and Lao from your room.

Day 6: Mekong and Golden Triangle
At 9 am you will start for the famous Golden Triangle. You will take a short walk to the Golden Buddha and make a boat trip to a village in Lao where you can try and buy the famous Lao Whisky – this village is a tourist attraction!
After lunch, you will visit the Hall of Opium. This museum will introduce you to the history of the Golden Triangle in a very professional way.
Thereafter, a two hours’ drive will bring you to Chiang Rai where you will visit the impressive White Temple Wat Rong Thun. This temple looks like a fairy tale castle! The masterpiece is located a little outside the city.
Afterwards, you will return to Chiang Mai. You will be back at your hotel in the evening.

Day 7: Departure from Chiang Mai
You will be brought to the airport. You can take a flight to the South where you can relax at one of Thailand’s beautiful beaches. We would be happy to present you some options.
